Balance Your Life with The Five Elements

Have you ever been exasperated with a friend who after begging you to host a party was the only “no-show?” How could she accept an invite for windsurfing in Mexico instead? Or perhaps you’re completely mystified why your spouse won’t part with the buttonless, threadbare raincoat from college. And don’t we all have a neighbor who brings out our inadequacies? How does she do it? You’ve locked yourself out of the house at 7 am in yesterday’s yoga pants; she’s perfectly coiffed and calmly watering the tulips. What makes people tick? What makes us tick? What if we had a system for figuring it out and using it to achieve balance and harmony in our lives?

Your impulsive friend who ditched the party is a Fire Personality. Your spouse is an Earth. The Vogue model next door is a Metal. And you might be a combination of two or three! Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood are the Five Elements personality types. Understanding the types; and, more importantly, understanding your own type, gives you the key to an ancient system for emotional and physical wellbeing.

The Five Elements is the ancient Chinese “theory of everything.” The foundation for Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, qigong and feng shui is a system of identifying and balancing the Five Elements found in all people, places, and things. For example, if your impulsive friend who ditched your party lets her dominant Fire Element burn out of control, she might suffer a physical or emotional burnout. Yoga and breath work combined with her windsurfing weekends would balance her Fire.

As a bonus, the Five Elements provides us insight and wisdom in maintaining balanced relationships. Your Fire friend may at times be exasperating, but she’s the best friend to have if you’re a stuck Water Element and need to get out of your rut with a dance class.

Join us for our Five Elements blog series as we examine the personality types of Fire, Earth, Metal, Water, and Wood. Learn to identify your dominant elements, bring them all into balance and live your best life.
